Who do you support for President? Post for September 10th

For many of you who will vote for the first time in 2012, you have to decide who you will vote for for President of the United States. Go to http://www.newsday.com/elections/where-obama-and-romney-stand-on-issues-1.3692133#4 and cycle through the newsday slide show. Then number and answer the following questions in the comments box:

1. In about 5 to 10 sentences sum up and explain the differences between the candidates on one issue.
2. In about 10 to 15 sentences, tell me who you would vote for in an election between Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama for the presidency of the United States. Explain WHY you would vote the candidate you would vote for, meaning tell me what are the specific areas where you think that candidate is superior.

  2. Obama has the edge over Romney which means he most likely will be the president for a second term. Citizens say the more they learn about Romney, the more they start to dislike him. A majority of citizens have approved Obama's State of Union Address of what he has laid out so far. Romney states that his business background gives him an edge in turning around the economy. Obama leads in most debatable categories like fighting terrorism and handle foreign policy but, they are dead even at the job creation topic. Arguments that Romney’s experience with business, will help create jobs. Obama has been fighting to make economic fairness for the middle class while Romney argues that the economy should remain stable by itself.

I would vote for the third party candidate because I am not a republican or democrat. I am not sure what party I belong to. I do not follow politics that much and don’t have much of an interest. I prefer to watch sports instead of politics. I think voting for the third party candidate will help the independent parties gain support. It would be nice to see an independent party win the election for the first time. Maybe next election in 2016 I will follow politics more than I do now. For now though, I am politically confused and don’t know which party I belong to. Also, my family doesn’t watch politics or really care much so it runs in the family.

  3. 1.The article gives a pretty detailed account of the presidential debate between Romney and Obama. It gives statistics on where Americans stand based on their views and how those polls are affecting what others opinions are and also where the candidates are placed in the running. Overall, Obama seems to have the upper hand in the election; however all of the statistics seem very close. He is definitely not winning by a lot; however it is enough to make him more superior than Romney. Most people tend to dislike Romney the more they hear about him and the policies he believes and wants to enforce. Yet, most feel Obama hasn’t done enough either, so they want new representation to fix the economy and stabilize a better government and society in general. It seems people are up in the air on who to vote for, but Obama gains societies’ trust better than Romney does.
2.I personally would vote for Barrack Obama for presidency because despite the way I feel for the most part about the job he has done so far, he ensures more comfort for citizens than Romney does. I feel Obama is a great speaker which gives him a really strong advantage in the election because a good speaker can impact people greatly. I feel that if one can instill a trust, a drive and confidence within our nation and prove that he or is the only person who can make this happen, then they will get majority of the votes. From the article I read, I got the impression that Romney seems pretty selfish and the notation of his salary was really unnecessary. I think that if he won, people wouldn’t really know what to expect and even though things are not so great now, they have improved and maybe Romney would ultimately make things worse. The job issue is a huge problem within the economy and unemployment actually has gone down slowly. I feel that progress is being made with Obama, just very little by little. I don’t like that Romney is vulnerable to the tax issue and his views on wealth are very one dimensional. He seems very opposed to change and if there is any I feel that it is his way or no way. I don’t have the faith in him that his intentions are for the best of the public and not just himself. I feel Obama just needs to patience and support from Americans that he can transform our nation into a healthier one overall. I think Obama has a better connection with society than Romney does and his second term as president can give him another chance to prove that our country can grow. If Obama can do what he says he wants to, takes actions quicker and prove he has what it takes to once again “unite” our states and recover, then he will win the race.

  5. The Washington Post article talks about the upcoming presidential election and how all the candidates stand in the polls. It goes into detail on how the U.S. citizens are starting to learn more about the Republican GOP’s and are beginning to dislike them. Two to one Americans say the more they learn about Romney, the less they like him. Also, Newt Gingrich has seen a lack of republican support and about 3 to 1 Americans are dissatisfied with his ideals. Even with some Americans not liking Romney himself and Obama are extremely close in the polls. Obama is slightly ahead of Romney and leads, 52 to 43 percent among all Americans.

I would vote for Barack Obama for president. He seems to have an eight year plan when he took office in 2008 and should finish off with two terms to fully help his economic package go into full effect. I agree with Obama because he is trying to protect the middle class. As time rolls on the gap between the middle class and upper class have been getting larger. With Obama as the president he can help maintain order and allow the middle class to grow. If he is removed from office we could see a huge change in our financial policy quickly which could ultimately devastate our economy, once again. Another quality that I adore about Obama is that he cares about every citizen. His 2004 speech in Massachusetts demonstrated that it’s not just a “black America” or a “white America” that each citizen should be treated equally and have the same rights. Lastly, I believe Obama is an excellent speaker who in tough times can give ease and piece of mind to the US citizens for the time being. I can’t picture Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich being like Obama.

  6. The February 6 article from the Washington Post, “Obama holds edge over Romney in general election matchup, poll finds,” is mostly a bunch of percentages and statistics concerning President Obama and the leading Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. Based on a telephone survey of 1000 adults taken last week, the majority of voters prefer Obama and his policies over those of Romney. Obama’s approval rating, determined through a general-election test, falls somewhere between 52 and 43%. While many American’s prefer Obama over Romney and feel that Romney comes off as unlikable and insensitive, not all Americans approve of all of Obama’s polices either. More specifically, many are not in favor of Obama’s economic policies, which are not boosting the economy as much as intended, or as much as the American people would like.

In an election between Romney and Obama, I would vote for Romney. I feel that he is more knowledgeable about the economy, considering his background in business, as opposed to Obama’s background, which is lacking in real-life business experience. Someone who is truly experienced in business will most likely be capable of coming up with economic solutions that are effective. As for Romney’s comments about “the very poor,” which were viewed as insensitive and dismissive, I feel that people may be overreacting. Although I believe that is very important to be mindful of and helpful to those who are living in poverty, the economy must work for everyone in the nation. An economy based purely on helping the poor advance economically is simply not what capitalism is about. As for Romney’s person wealth, I believe that it should not be a factor that helps form anyone’s opinion. A presidential candidate’s personal wealth is not relevant to the election, and should not determine who will lead the country. If anything, it represents the ideals of capitalism. Although I will admit that Romney is far from being an ideal presidential candidate, I feel that he may be a better choice than Obama, who is not employing the right strategies to deal with the economic turmoil that the United States has found itself in. While I will most certainly do much more research on both candidates before I actually vote, I do not see myself voting for Obama in the 2012 election.

  7. Currently it is looking like Obama is going to be running against Mitt Romney in the general election, who is ahead in the GOP race after recently winning Nevada and Florida primaries. Newt Gingrich is another front runner in the GOP race, and if he were to be running against Obama in the general election, experts predict President Obama getting reelected by a ten point margin. If Obama is campaigning against Romney come November, it is less clear who will be our next president. Though recently Romney’s approval rating falls as Obama’s seems to be rising, they are still very closely matched.
Come November, despite who the republican candidate ends up being, I would most definitely vote for Obama. All of the current front runners in the GOP are pretty radical and despite my being very liberal, it does not seem many conservatives support the candidates either. Though Obama is not as liberal or as ambitious as I would want him to be, I still adore him and cannot deny the many things he has accomplished in these four years. The past two most recent years have been much less productive than the first two, but I account this to Congress which refuses to get along or negotiate with Obama on most anything, where Obama is always willing to meet them halfway. I can only hope that if Obama is reelected, he returns with a more reasonable Congress this time. Compared to Mitt Romney, Obama’s policies are much more in favor of the people, the middle class of America, where Mitt Romney seems to support policies that would only benefit the cooperation and the wealthiest of all Americans. The fact that he considers cooperations “people” and thinks the very poor Americans are getting along fine with their safety net horrifies me. Obama is a true president of the people, being a sort of mediator between both radical ends of the political spectrum and coming from a background many Americans can relate to – contrary to Romney.

  8. This article is about how President Obama has an edge over Mitt Romney in the general-election matchup. Many Americans are caught in between on whether to reelect President Obama or not because Obama has a negative effect on the people about the economy. About 55% of Americans, who are following the campaigns, disapprove of what the GOP candidates say. The more Americans are learning about Romney the less they approve and like him. 57% of Americans approve more of what Obama says than Romney. In general-election test, Obama is leading Romney 53 to 43 percent. Obama won more Americans over when Osama Bin Laden was killed, which also helped with his gain against Romney. Even though Obama might be leading against Romney, they are dead even with votes on job creation. If I were to vote I think I would vote for more Romney than Obama. I would vote for Romney because he has more experience in business and could turn the economy around. He said he could help the economy improve, and create more jobs for people. With Obama being our President, he has not helped the job creation in the United States, personally. I think we need someone new to come into office and actually make a change in our economy so it can help everyone improve their living and with a better economy helps the creation of jobs. While Obama has been in office, there has been a lot of layoffs, cutback, and the unemployment rate has increased significantly. I personally think job creations and fixing the economy should be our number one priority. With a good economy, Americans can feel stable and not worried about loosing their jobs, houses, or money. I feel like that is not the main priority for President Obama. So between Romney and Obama, I would vote for Romney.

  10. This article is saying whether or not Obama has the right to be reelected over Mitt Romney. Although many don’t agree with Obama and his view on the economy, it seems that those who learn more about Romney and listen to his campaign tend to like him less. Meanwhile, the president’s recent statements are better reviewed. Among the roughly 6 in 10 Americans who heard or read about the president’s State of the Union address, 57 percent say they approve of most of what he laid out. In a general test, Obama leads Romney 52 to 43 percent among all Americans. More narrowly, 51 to 45 percent, among registered voters. If I were to vote in the 2012 election, I would most likely vote for Obama. Although I am not very involved in politics, I think based on what I have heard so far I agree with more of what Obama has to offer. I don’t think I will vote until I have a clear understanding of the decisions I stand for so I would need to further understand politics and the government and economy. I feel Obama did a fairly good job in his time as president and if given more time I think he could help us even more.

  11. 1.) Both Barrack Obama and Mitt Romney are closely matched when it comes to the upcoming 2012 presidential election. Each candidate has specific principles which make them very different. Romney has an extensive business background that gives him superior experience to turn around the economy and boost job creation. His experience is considered a positive among registered voters, giving him a narrow edge over Obama on handling the economy in general. The governor also leads on handling the federal deficit, an area where the president’s ratings remain stuck in solid negative territory. They are also closely matched when it comes to handling taxes . However, Obama has big leads in many other areas, including the question of who would better protect the middle class, handle foreign policy and fight terrorism.

2.) Although there is plenty of time between now and November to vote at 2012 presidential election, I plan to follow the Republican primaries to analyze the platform and issues presented by governor Romney. If pressed to vote for one or the other at the moment, I would side with Mitt Romney. I believe governor Romney is much more capable of increasing job opportunities, reducing the deficit, and providing more security for the borders regarding immigration policies.
Although Barrack Obama inherited an economic mess as a result of the Great Recession due to the Bush administration, I believe that he hasn’t been very proactive in his polices to reduce the deficit and improve health care (Obama Care). Romney also had experience running the Olympics and turning that into a profitable event. His business background has given him the upper-hand in this close race to presidency. Many registered voters have taken note of these positive opportunities under the leadership of Romney. This is what gives Romney a narrow edge over Obama.

  12. 1. This article compares and contrasts the publics’ view of Obama and Romney. It shows through statistics that Obama’s approval rating has risen but it is still very close. It outlined that the race for the GOP nomination has been very negative, which gives the Republican contenders a bad public impression. Independent voters play a key role in the election because their vote could go either way between parties. The favoritism between Romney and Obama is split for independents. Obama’s State of the Union Address and drop in the unemployment rate has helped his momentum for re-election but is not enough for him to have a strong lead in the race.

    2. If I had to vote for either Obama or Romney; I’m not sure who I’d pick. I don’t really like either of them. I don’t think Romney is trustworthy at all. He “flip flops” on issues all the time, contradicts himself constantly, and denies past things he said. I really hate that he’s “pro-corporate” and that he said “corporations are people”. If corporations get the same rights as people, that would be taking rights away from actual people. It scares me that his campaign is funded by Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase & Co, Morgan Stanley, CitiGroup, Bank of America, Credit Suisse Group, and other major corporate names. I don’t like that he’s against immigration meanwhile his family is from Mexico. I also don’t like that he’s against abortion. He also only pays 14% income tax rate when he’s a multi-millionaire.

I don’t think Obama is as bad as Romney but I still don’t like him very much. I think he only tries to appease people, especially now that he’s up for re-election. I first applauded him for pulling troops out of Iraq but I realized that this was only him following Bush’s original plan. I find it unappealing that he passed the National Defense Authorization Act on New Years Eve, when no one was attention so that is a bit sneaky. If PIPA and SOPA pass, I will be much more alarmed. Even though the economy isn’t very prosperous right now I don’t think that’s Obama’s fault and it’s hard to get anything done when you have a bipartisan split in Congress. One thing I do like about Obama is that he fights for the middle class. I think if I had to pick I would choose Obama as the lesser of the two evils.

  13. the article basically stated in total numbers that Obama was leading. The article stated to talk about the economy. and brought up Romney business background. But they also bring up that according to the poll numbers that Obama understands more of the economic problems. They brought up Romney's weak point with taxes. Most Americans still think the economy is bad. If i had to pick a candidate based on this article alone I'd pick neither. I'll have to things based on the other issues. Based on economics I'd have to give the point to Obama he is trying to improve things but as a whole he made things worse. On a social issues it's a tie because on both sides i have the thing i agree with and my disagreements. But as a whole Obama wins sightly. But whoever is the new president they are going to have make a majority of changes. Like to fix the economy. fixing the trust lost from a lot of Americans due to certain bills and actions.

  14. Obama would like to raise the taxes for the people who make more than $200,000, and lower the taxes on people who make less than $200,000. Romney would like to lower taxes for everyone. Romney wants to change the highest taxes from 35% to 28%. He also wants to cut corporate tax rates from 35% to 25%. Obama wants to raise the taxes for corporations.

I would vote for Obama for many reasons. One reason is that he is planning on lowering tax rates for the middle and lower classes. This fits into most of the country, which benefits many people. Also, he is trying to provide medical insurance for everyone. This includes people that cannot afford it, and people that have existing medical problems, such as a heart condition. Obama is also trying to maintain Social Security. While doing this, he is trying to keep the Social Security tax at a minimum. When it comes to war, Obama started drawing troops out of Afghanistan. He is planning on drawing out all troops from Afghanistan by 2014. Obama supports same sex marriage and believes gay and lesbian partners can have full Medicare and Medicaid in a hospital. This is why I would vote for Barrack Obama.

  15. 1. On the issue of gay rights, Obama has made it clear he is an open supporter, inclusive of marriage, military, and medical finance. His achievement of the repeal of the military ban on openly gay members and his direction to assist gay patient's partners in medical settings show his determination to eliminate discrimination throughout, at least, government facilities. On the other hand, Romney has shown he opposes any type of gay rights recognition and/or assistance of the matter regarding government action. While Obama feels gay marriage should be left up to the states, Romney feels it is a matter of the constitution and writing a new amendment. Romney does, however, feel civil union determinations should be up to the states, unless they are too similar to the concept of marriage. Also unlike Obama, he is supportive of the ban of openly gay people in the military.
    2. I would easily decide to vote for Obama in the upcoming election. Many new voters, and I’m assuming old, will vote for whomever their parents vote for, however, I have made my own decision. Honestly, putting it into highschooler’s terms, Obama is pretty much the first normal president the country has had (at least since I can remember) who represents not only middle class but ALL types of middle class, meaning gay, black, white, etcetcetc; a decent human being. I am not saying he is perfect, although many accuse him of being slow when in actuality congress did everything possible to limit him, his political views are completely acceptable in my opinion. Romney is more interested in sacrificing the country’s benefit for his republican ideals, such as in the matters of religion, abortion, global warming, energy, etc, while Obama cares more about the countries best interest in all aspects of his campaign. Another note, Obama presents himself as a lot more sure of his decisions than Romney. Romney has flip-flopped his decisions numerous times over the years, on abortion, immigration, gun regulation, and more. For example, on the issue of abortion, Romney, before 1994, was anti-choice, then told Massachusetts voters of his flip flop to pro-choice due to the death of a relative after a failed illegal abortion... then flipped back, even talking about cutting Planned Parenthood programs. The indecisiveness of many of Romney’s thoughts make me much more interested in voting for Obama. It is difficult to talk about politics without worrying whether or not I have offended anyone or if I sound like a crazy person, but I know Obama is the right choice for the country even though he has a lot of work to do to improve the economy and other issues he inherited. I don’t want someone running the country who feels the government should have control over women’s bodies, gay people’s happiness (even if it makes some right-winged people unhappy), and frankly what religion people follow, because when it comes down to it most of Romney’s republican views are based on religion and the bible. I’m deeply sorry if I offended anyone or made anyone uncomfortable; I know political discussions have a tendency to do that.

  16. In my opinion, Obama and Romney are different in there political views due to the fact that Obama is a liberal and Romney is more conservative. For example, Obama supports gay marriage. He understands that times have changed and now it is more socially acceptable among the general public. Romney on the other hand, feels that the policy should stay more "traditional" and not allow gay marriage to be recognized by the law. Also, Obama is in favor of increasing taxes for the wealthy without having an impact on the lower and middle class. This "Robin Hood" act will make the relationship between all three classes closer to becoming equal. This will also be taking money from those who can spare it as apposed to those who are in more sensitive financial situations. Romney feels that everyone should be taxed equally and that this is simply a capitalistic, "dog eat dog" nation. Both views are very different.

Personally, being a first time voter for this upcoming election, I feel that Obama's objectives are better geared towards the best circumstances and beliefs for me. I respect that Obama is pro-choice. I believe that not all pregnancies are pre planned and intentional and it would be unfair to that child to be raised in ill prepared environment. Also, Obama has done an incredibly large amount to decrease the unemployment rate. Although there is still a long way to go, the percentage has dropped from 9.8 to 8.2 during Obama's time in office. With companies providing jobs for the past two years, we are much better off than our lowest point. I truly feel that Obama's reelection would be the best thing for the nation.

  18. Obama displays more of a liberal standing on issues, where Romney displays a much more conservative ideology. Areas where their opinions differ most include gay rights- where Obama believes that group of people should be guarenteed the same rights as a straight couple and Mit Romney is not a supporter; the area of gun laws, where Obama does not believe that is a hot topic for debate and Romney believes that gun laws should be much stricter; and, the largest issue, health care, Obama is very much in favor of government provided health care and even had Obama care passed while he was in office, in contrast to Romney, whoe opposes Obama's actions while in office.

Although I will not be able to vote in the coming election, I would vote for Obama. If Ron Paul was still in the race, I would have voted for him, but he's not a choice. Romney is very much aloof to many of the problems the average American faces because of his wealth. I feel that the president should know what the middle class American is experiencing and know how to help- not be entirely disconnected. I don't agree with Romney's stand on immigration, health care or the economy. Although Obama is not my first choice for president, I think he'd be a whole lot better than Mit Romney.

  19. 1. The article compares the different viewpoints of President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on controversial issues in America, and shows where they stand on resolving them. On the issue of war, both Obama and Romney are in support of ending U.S. combat and drawing soldiers out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014. However, on the subject of military spending, Obama would reduce the amount of money being spent, while Romney would seek to increase it.

    2. Personally I would vote for Obama because I share many of the same ideals he has. While Mitt Romney does have his qualifications, the way he denies things he’s previously said and shifts his opinion on different issues makes me less confident on how he’d fulfill his duties if he were elected into office. Obama, on the other hand, is a confident speaker, more in tuned with the citizens of America (in my opinion), and makes his decisions with their well-being and the future of the nation in mind. Not to say Obama doesn’t have his faults though, he could certainly do more to fix the economy and reduce unemployment in America, but the problems Obama inherited when he was first elected into office weren’t things that had simple solutions, and would likely have required more than one term to resolve. While I’m not saying I think Obama is guaranteed to fix all the issues in America, I still believe he can get things done and would be deserving of a second term.

  20. 1. The election of either Obama and Romney is very close, but they both have different outlooks on many issues. The issue of same sex marriage is a difference that is seen between the both of then. Obama supports the legalization of gay rights, while Romney opposes the right. Romney believes as stated in the constitution that it is not right and should be banned. Obama see's it as it should be openly legal for all states, but states have the right to their choice of the situation. I like that Obama see's it as people can choose who they marry and it shouldn't be based on the constitution.

    2. In the election between Romney and Obama, I would re-elect Obama as our president for another term. I would vote Obama to be our president because of many things he has done and many things he says he is going to do. Already Obama has helped out our nation greatly and help us slowly get out of debt. I agree 100% with the legalization of abortion rights, being a woman myself, every individual were born with their rights and whatever they choose to pursue should be their decision not the nations. Obama is also trying to set a date to take the troops out of Afghanistan to help end the war. Obama helped with the death of Osama Bin Laden in a way. He has tried a lot for this country and has overall helped us greatly. Obama supports gay marriage, every citizen should have a right to their own decision.Obama also believes in the right to women getting abortions and birth control. Each citizen has a right to do what they want to do.

    1. The two candidates have vastly different views on gay rights. While Obama supports gay rights and same sex marriage, his opponent Romney does not. They both agree about the lifted ban o gays in the military. However, Romney does not believe in same sex marriage, or even civil union, and that gay couples should not have the same rights and benefits of a straight, married couple.

    2. In this election, I would vote for Obama. I believe he would do better things for our country. I support his views on abortion, because I believe a woman has the right to do with their bodies as they please. Making the law national will prevent women from having to travel over state lines to get an abortion if they need it. Another big concern of mine is the "going green" movement.I strongly support Obama's work in trying to reduce our dependence on potentially destructive resources. Romney, however, is proposing drilling plans that could have dozens of unforeseen complications and harm the environment beyond natural repair. However, my biggest concern is gay rights. Not only is Romney against gay marriage, but civil union as well.As a pan-sexual, I would like to think that if I do fall in love with another woman, I can marry her. I can't get behind a man who says "all citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of sexual preference", but only seems to be interested in these rights if you're joining the military. I can't support someone who thinks it's okay to have men and women fighting for freedom, without giving them their own. In this situation, Obama has my support.

  22. First, I want to start off by saying that I have always been very politically confused. When it comes to politics, I have my positives and negatives about each candidate in my mind. However, it seems to me like Obama may pull himself through for another term. This may just be my opinion but I feel as if that the more I find out about Romeny, the more I lean towards adding up the dislikes about him. I strongly agree of Obama’s State of Union Address and his feelings towards important issues such as terrorism and budget cuts. And although Romeny has a lot of experience in business, Obama on the other hand has been continually fighting to create economic fairness between the three classes. The economy has no way of remaining stable by itself, although Romeny would think otherwise. Anyways, that’s just my opinion. Once again I do not follow politics often so I can’t fully say which party I vote for.

  23. This year during the election there are a lot of major issues. Abortion and birth control is very important. Obama seems to be pro both whereas Romney seems to be more against them. Both canditates seem to want and tackle the debt. Obama seems to want and lower military spending and raise taxes for high income citizens whereas Romney wants to cut federal jobs. Obama seems to favor green energy while Romney seems to believe that it is not yet a viable choice. Obama seems to favor gay marriage, but believes it should be left up to the individual states while Romney wants a constitutional amendment outlawing it. Obama and Romney both want to ensure that Iran won’t get nuclear weapons and they both seem to want to avoid war but Romney seems to defend Israel more. Obama seems not to favor gun control laws whereas Romney outright opposes them. Obama has tried to push through his healthcare plan while Romney hopes to be able to take it down. Obama wants to raise taxes for the high class citizens while Romney hopes for tax cuts across the board.

Overall I tend to agree more with Romney on the economic issues but more with Obama on the social and political issues. I believe that taxes should try and be lower for all classes and that only raising it for one group isn't truly fair. I agree with Romney on the idea that in order to balance the debt federal jobs should be cut because I believe that a lot of money is wasted in huge bureaucracies and that it should try and be streamlined. I disagree with Obama’s view on raising taxes for the higher classes, but agree with less military spending to balance the debt. I also agree with Romney on the idea that green energy isn’t yet viable. I think that if it was just as cost effective as gasoline then it would be a great thing to help us get off our dependence on foreign oil and help us reduce pollution, but currently i dont think its cheap enough to get any real momentum. I agree with Obama on the birth control issue. Although I personally dislike the idea of abortion and don’t support it, I believe that every individual person should be able to make their own choice if the situation was ever to occur. I agree with Obama on his stance of same-sex marriage because I don’t really believe that it should be such a big deal however I do believe it should be called a civil union because I feel it will go through quicker. However, I do disagree with Obama on the national health care because although i think that it would be a great thing I don’t really believe its the governments place to deal with that. I think Obama has a better view on social standings, but I agree more with Romney for the economics part. If I had to vote for one of them I would most likely vote for Romney but I wouldn’t be 100% for either of them.

  24. On the subject of gay rights, Obama and Romney show some stark differences. Obama supports same-sex marriage and recognizes it as identical to a heterosexual marriage in regards to legal status. Romney opposes it, going as far as to desire a constitutional amendment to completely ban same-sex marriage. Obama believes the matter should be decided individually by states, where as Romney will only let the states decide on the legal terms of civil unions. However, Romney can be somewhat inconsistent and vague in his beliefs, as in 2002 he claimed “all citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of sexual preference.” Obama has proposed allowing the same visitation privileges married couples to same-sex partners. Romney does not agree with this as he does not support civil unions if they are exactly the same as marriages.

If I could vote in this election, I would vote for Obama. With that being said, don’t think I subscribe to every one of Obama’s beliefs, it is more of weighing the pros and cons of both candidates and finding more common ground with Obama. I find Obama’s view of taxes to make much more sense than Romney’s. I completely agree that the wealthy should be taxed more. If the wealthy has more money, it’s pretty logical to tax them more since it’s doubtful if they’d even notice the difference. When dealing with the multi-multi-millionaires, they have so much money it would be hard to spend it all without buying dozens of million dollar mansions, or just literally burning it by the thousands, so what difference does it make to them if they get taxed more? People can argue that those who are making that much money had to work for it. I’m inclined to disagree, citing evidence that the wealth tends to stay within the top five percent of people. People with money usually come with money, and those working under the poverty line are undoubtedly working harder than those at the top. Working multiple jobs at all hours of the night just to pay for the bare necessities, no luxuries or excessive spending, these people put in more work than those at the top. How much work is it really when you own a bank and just sit back and watch people borrow money from you and then make what you lent out plus interest that can amount to the same number? It seems like Romney subscribes to the trickle down theory despite its repeated failures through history. Besides that, I’ll side with Obama as he is more open-minded on many topics such as gay marriages and abortion rights. I’m heavily against guns and hope whoever started the development of guns is spinning in his grave, regretting he ever did it, and although neither candidates are very strict with gun control, Obama is slightly more in favor for further regulations.

  25. This article compared and contrasted the economic, social, and political views of our current president Barrack Obama and candidate Mitt Romney. To begin with social views, abortion and homosexual marriage, each candidate have complete opposite views. Obama is pro-choice for abortion and supports same sex marriage where Romney is pro-life and opposes same sex marriage. In economics, they are also very opposite. Obama believes in highly taxing the wealthy and cutting taxes for people barely getting by. Romney wants to cut taxes all together for everyone.
It’s hard to say who I would vote for in the presidency election between Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama. I like certain views from each of them. On the social issues such as abortion and gay marriage I agree with Obama’s views. I feel that the government should not have a say in your personal life. But when it comes to taxes I completely disagree with Obama’s views. The wealthy worked for what they have and it is not their responsibility to help out the lower class. This is the way our economy has always worked and I don’t think it should change. I also agree with Romney’s military views. I think that in today’s world it is necessary for the military to be built up. In addition Romney has well planned immigration ideas. He is increasing visas for holders of advanced degrees in math, science, and engineering. These are the type of immigrants that we need in the country not unskilled workers. Overall I think I would vote for Mitt Romney.

  26. 1.)President Barak Obama and Mitt Romney hold diverse viewpoints on a variety of issues. For instance, their opposing beliefs can be demonstrated through the issue of gay rights. Obama supports same-sex marriage and has worked towards improving equality by repealing the military’s ban on homosexual service members. In addition, he has required all hospitals that use Medicare and Medicaid funds to allow visitation privileges to homosexual partners of patients. On the other hand, Romney does not support same-sex marriage and is in opposition to the establishment of civil unions as well. However, he supports gay members of the military and states that all citizens deserve equal rights.

2.)I would vote for Barak Obama as president because I agree with the majority of his opinions, whereas my beliefs significantly contrast with those of Mitt Romney. Obama seems to have more concern for the environment as he places regulations on toxic pollutants and funds the use of green energy. In contrast, Romney does not view global warning as an issue and wants to further drilling in Alaska and wildlife refuges. Romney appears to have less respect for the environment, which is a huge concern to me. Another factor that furthers my support for Obama is his decision to end harsh interrogation techniques in regards to terrorism. Romney, however, believes that terrorism suspects do not deserve constitutional rights and states that he does not view waterboarding as a torturous practice. This fact makes me sincerely question Romney’s sense of morality and integrity. Overall, I believe that Obama would be a stronger president than Romney, therefore he would receive my vote without hesitation.

  28. 1. Obama and Romney have very different stances on controversial issues. One of these issues is whether or not abortion should be illegal.Obama is pro-choice and supports abortion rights. He also believes that health plans from a women's workplace should provide free contraceptives. Romney opposes abortion rights even though he used to be a supporter. He believes that abortion right should be decided by the state and says he would end federal funding for it.
    MMartinico
2.If I were to vote in the 2012 election, I would vote for Barrack Obama. I agree with his stance on many of the issues in the article. For example, although Obama approved drilling for oil, he focused on developing alternative energy and increasing the fuel economies of many new vehicles. Romney doesn't think green energy is a viable source of energy. Also, I agree with Obama on war. He started removing troops from Afghanistan and wants to reduce the US army size. Romney wants to increase the budget by $100 billion which would increase our size. Lastly, I feel that abortion should be a women's choice and should remain legal which is what Obama believes. Overall, I think that Obama's views would be more liked and I believe that he should win the election.

  29. 1.The issue the two candidates are facing is abortion and birth control. The difference between the two candidates is that they both have a different views on the situation.Obama is all for abortion, with some rules along with it.he feels that the morning after pill should be free for all woman but all girls 16 and under a required to have a prescription.the candidate Romney opposes abortion and birth control.he used to support them but then changed his mind. he feels that all abortion should be illegal and roe.v wade laws are to be opposed.
2.In the upcoming election I would vote for candidate Mitt Romney. I would vote for Romney because I believe in some of the same circumstances he does. When it comes to Gay marriage, I strongly agree with the fact that their can be civil unions but no marriage between the same sex. The constitution states that their should not be gay marriage and I also agree with that. Romney is a business man and I like that, coming from a family where we own our own business. Romney's decision will strongly influence my family's decision. I agree with that fact that he wants to keep taxes the same amount unlike Obama who wants to raise taxes for the people that make a better income, which to me I believe is strongly unfair. Romney to me I also view him as an everyday person and would be a great choice as president. I also like how he wants to end the war in Afghanistan, I believe it has been going on for way to long and there needs to be a stop. The gun laws shouldn't be as strict because certain people get guns for different reasons. They should see if the person is responsible enough for a gun, but the laws shouldn't be as strict to people who want to hunt or anyone looking to go into the army. I also support that Romney is pro-life because people may start to abuse the fact that abortion is legalized and stop using protection and just get an abortion whenever they feel. In certain cases such as rape is different and I wish that there was an in between when it comes to the legalization of abortion. Rape victims I know would not like to carry around their rapist's child, that I feel is the only way that abortion should be legalized. Romney would be a great choice as president because I support all of his suggestions.

  30. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney differ greatly on the issue of the environment. While Obama has not been as hostile to the oil companies as some environmentalists would wish, he is still working to establish greener energy sources for America. He believes that climate change is a reality and that it is largely the fault of human industrialization. While Romney says he does believe in climate change, he expresses doubt over how much of the blame should be put on the burning of fossil fuels. He also thinks that energy independence should be achieved through offshore drilling by American companies and not alternative sources.

Both of the candidates are flawed, but I am more on the side of Obama than Romney. I tend to agree with liberal ideology more than conservative, and Obama mostly does a good job of representing the left wing. The environment is especially important for me and one in which I feel Obama holds the more sensible position. The same-sex marriage issue is also critical. Denying equal rights for people who are different from the status quo is too old of a value to have any weight in the modern world. On the economy, I think that Obama is more focused on long-term solutions than Romney's policy of making drastic cuts. Among most developed countries, our tax rates for the top bracket are extremely low. When the entire country is still suffering economically, the wealthy should have to contribute more in taxes to ensure stability. Romney has also changed opinions too much for the election for me to be comfortable with him as president. I don't think Obama has been doing badly enough to lose the reelection campaign, especially since it would be safer for the leadership of the nation to not flip every few years.

  31. 1. One issue Romney and Obama disagree on would be abortion and birth control. Obama states that he is pro-choice meaning that he believes it is a woman’s choice to make the decision of abortion. He doesn’t think abortion should be done but he doesn’t want to ban it either. Romney, on the other hand, is pro-life. He believes that abortion should be banned. He mentions that state law should guide abortion rights and that Roe v Wade should be reversed.

    2. In an election between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, I would vote for Obama. Overall, his policies appeal to me more than Mitt Romney’s policies. I agree with Obama’s stance on abortion because I believe it should be a woman’s choice whether or not she wants to get an abortion. I don’t think it should be done, but I don’t think it should be banned either. Mitt Romney is on the extreme with abortion and I do not agree with what he believes in. Obama also believes in recognition of same-sex marriage. I think that this should not even be an issue and two people who are the same sex should have the same rights as any other individual. Romney believes that it should be banned all together but I completely disagree with him. Romney says an amendment to the constitution should be added and he said that it should not be up to the states to decide on same sex marriage. These are the main areas where the two candidates disagree on which is why I chose Obama over Romney.

  32. 1. On the issue of gay rights Obama and Romney differ significantly. While Obama sees the issue of gay marriage of something solely up to the states, Romney believes it should be banned across the nation. However, Romney is open to the idea of civil unions. He feels if this comes into play the states have the right to decide what benefits will come out of civil unions. His opposition will remain if civil unions are a replica of marriage; a mere name change will not make Romney support this. Both Obama and Romney want to protect gay military members' rights to serve.

    2. In regards to the upcoming election I am not sure who I would vote for. Because of my lack of knowledge in certain areas I feel that any opinion I would have would not be very strong. There are certain areas that I have a very clear opinion in though. I support gay rights and I am pro-choice. Due to this, in these aspects I would lean more towards Obama. Things such as gun regulation and foreign policy are not as prominent to me thus I do not have an opinion either way. Because of my lack of knowledge I do not know how certain things, such as taxes, will affect me. All I can do is watch the news and listen to the candidates ideas. The only sure strong point I am aware of in regards to Romney is his strong business background. I believe this could be a key factoring in fixing the economy but I am not even aware of the huge problems. At this point I would vote for Obama, but honestly, I would not even want to because I would feel that my vote was an uninformed one. The little that I am aware of and care about is not significant enough to make me want to vote either way.

  33. 1. One major issue difference between Obama and Romney includes the dispute on gay marriage. Obama supports the idea of same sex marriage, for he has ordered the requirement of all hospitals to grant visiting privileges to gay patients that get medicare/medicaid. Romney however does not support gay marriage and feels it should be banned as an amendment from the Constitution. Romney does not support civil unions as well. Despite the fact that he doesn’t support gay marriage, Romney feels that it should be left up to the states to decide the circumstances regarding same sex marriage.
2.Based on the readings from the newsday slideshow, I would vote for Obama for this years election. I feel that Obama’s plans for our country are generally better than Romney’s. Romney plans to add about a hundred billion dollars worth of armed forces improvements to the Pentagon budget in 2016. I feel thats a ridiculous amount of money that can be used on other issues in our country right now. Obama however plans to reduce the amount of money spent towards the military. Overall it would be a cut of about four hundred eighty seven billion dollars worth of military spending over a decade. There is also the issue that regards gay marriage. Obama supports the idea of same sex marriage while Romney disagrees. I agree with Obama and feel that there is no problem with the idea of gay marriage. I honestly feel that it is ridiculous that Romney resents the idea. The global warming issue is another reason why I favor Obama in this election. Obama feels that the people are major contributors of global warming and I agree with him as well. Romney however feels that the people minorly contribute to global warming. Its obvious that us people have caused an increase to global warming throughout the years based on the facts and data collected. Overall I favor Obama in this election and feel that he will push our country in the direction of success.

  34. 1. On the issue of social security, Romney and President Obama have a little bit of different views. Obama has not yet proposed a plan to address the long term financial problems of social security. He had a proposal that made a new measurement of inflation that would reduce increases in social security benefits. It would reduce the long-term decrease by around 25 percent. Romney, protected the status quo for people 55 and over, however for the next generation of people retiring he would raise the retirement age for full benefits by 1 or 2 years and would decrease inflation increases in benefits for wealthier people.

    2. I would vote for Obama for President. I feel as though I have some of the same views as President Obama. He has already been President for 2 years and we would know what to expect. Obama plans to have all troops out of Afghanistan by 2014. I like this because he is ending the war. Also, he supports same-sex marriage. He directed the government to require all hospitals that get Medicaid and Medicare to grant visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners of patients. On the issue of energy and the environment, he proposes ending subsidies to oil industry. As a senior in high school and soon going to college, I support Obama's views on education. He wants Congress to agree to decrease federal aid to colleges that go too far in tuition. I agree with many views of Obama, so I would vote for him.

  35. 1) Obama is on the liberal side, while Romney is more conservative. These presidential candidates disagree on most political issues. While Obama supports gay marriage and believes that each state should be able to deicide whether it condones gay marriage or not, Romney is against gay marriage. He believes that it is wrong. Obama believes that climate change and global warming are very well happening and caused by humans. Romney believes in global warming and climate change, but isn’t sure how much humans really have an impact, or if much attention should really be paid to the “issue”. Obama believes that taxes should be cut for the lower and middle class, while Romney believes taxes should be cut for ALL classes. Obama is pro choice while Romney is pro life. These are just some of each of the presidential candidates beliefs and views.

    2) If I could vote, I would 100 percent vote for Mitt Romney. I believe in everything he believes in. I think all of Obamas views are ridiculous. Cutting taxes for just the middle and lower class it just stupid. Why do the people that work the hardest and EARN the most money have to suffer by paying more than everyone else? These people earned this money. The lower class should not get handouts and breaks for slacking off. Also along with Romney, I believe that the environment should not be a main focus of government. I think government should follow more along the lines of the bible and the past. I also believe that abortion is completely wrong and like Romney, life begins at conception. Women should not be able to decide that they want to end a baby’s life. My views are conservative and I believe that if Obama is reelected, our country will go nowhere.

  36. This upcoming campaign between Romney and Obama is in my eyes going to be a very close race. They both stand out in a lot of ways that they both have many positives and negatives. Romney and Obama have very different opinions on the war over seas in Afghanistan. Obama wants to cut down the size of the Army and Marine Corps while Romney wants to put 100 billion dollars into strengthening our military. Many people think we spend too much on our military but I disagree. I think having a strong military is a good thing but we shouldn’t forget about education because that is just as important to this nation.
If I was able to vote for someone in this race I would vote for Romney. I like his look on the military. I already enlisted in the United States Army so I would like our military to grow in size so I can keep my job and reenlist as many times as I please. Even if Obama does win it won’t be the end of the world for me because honestly I don’t care, no matter who wins I will still be serving it’s just a matter of who the commander in chief will be. Whether the president is Romney or Obama I will still serve the same way that’s why I honestly don’t care too much about this upcoming election. I do think Obama’s look on Iran is a bit better than Romney’s. I believe we should interfere with Iran unless we need to. I feel like this country is sick of war and won’t support the troops overseas if we get involved and it is just unnecessary causalities. This is going to be a close race and I find both Romney and Obama fit for the job

  37. 1. Both President Obama and candidate Mitt Romney have very different views on present-day issues going on in our country. One extremely controversial topic being decided upon between the two candidates is gay rights. Where one candidate feels that their sexual orientation should have nothing to do with the natural rights they have as humans, the other feels that it is completely unconstitutional. President Obama entirely supports same-sex marriage and has been able to repeal the military ban on openly gay military members. Obama is hoping to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, and has made it so that all hospitals receiving Medicaid and Medicare financing must give visitation rights to gay and lesbian partners of patients. His view of gay rights and marriage is far different than Mitt Romney, who is strongly against legal recognition of same-sex marriage and feels it should be banned with an amendment to the Constitution so that the the power is more concentrated instead of leaving it up to the states. He is also very much against civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by just last name. It is clear that their views on this issue very much differ, and for some, will be a significant determining factor when it comes to who they'll be voting for in the 2012 election.

    2. If i were voting in in the 2012 Presidential election i think i would vote for Mitt Romney. I think much of the younger generation is drawn to Barack Obama because of his youthful energy and the younger crowd finds his views on things relateable to theirs. However, while much of my generation is all for systems that help the less-fortunate, i like the way Mitt Romney is looking to adress them. For example, on the issue of health care, President Obama is looking to creating systems where taxes will be raised in order to help the unemployed, where are Mitt Romney wants to guarantee protection to people who are covered for a certain period of time against losing insurance if they become ill or leave their job and need another policy. He wants to allow people to have the option of Medicare. Another issue is immigration, where Obama feels young illegal immigrants should be allowed to work and attend school here. I side more with Mitt Romney's view on this, who opposes education benefits to illegal immigrants. Obama believes in raising the taxes while Romney is looking to lower them, which i too agree with. On the issue of energy and environment, Obama is convinced that we are the prime reason that global warming is occurring, where as Mitt Romney feels that we are deffinatly a contributing factor but certainly not the only reason, which i agree with. Although i agree with Mitt Romney on a lot of issues, i feel as though President Obama appeals to the young which is enough to win him over in the upcoming election.

  38. 1.) Article 7 is about gay rights. It states that Obama supports gay rights. Obama believes that a right the gay community should have is same-sex marriage. He supports same-sex marriage and thinks it should be legalized around the country. On the other hand, Romney doesn’t support same-sex marriage. He says it should be banned with an amendment to the Constitution. He also opposes civil unions but say that it should be left up to the states to decide what rights should be allowed under that union.

2.) If I were to vote between Mitt Romney and Barrack Obama in an election for the presidency of the Untied States of America, I think that I would vote for Mitt Romney. I would vote for Mitt Romney because I agree more with him on certain issues. I believe that Mitt Romney is much more superior in certain areas than Barrack Obama is. An example would be gun control. Romney has pushed for more gun control, where Obama hasn’t. After the Colorado shooting and theatre attack, Romney has favored tougher enforcement on existing gun laws. I agree with this because I think that it would make the world much safer if gun laws were much stricter. Another example would be abortion. Romney opposes abortion rights, where Obama supports them. I agree with Romney in the fact that I do not support abortion. I do believe that women have the right to do as they wish with their body, but I believe that if you make a mistake that it is your responsibility to deal with them.

  39. One of the major disagreements between the two candidates is to due with abortion. This is a very big problem in our country because people look at it in different ways. Senator Romney believes that life begins at conception which means having an abortion is considered killing a human being. Obama believes that having an abortion is pro choice and that it is up to the women to decide whether or not they want to have one. Although he believes in pro choice he would like to reduce the amount of abortions occurring in the country. There are many reasons why abortion should be legal and why it should be illegal but I feel that there are more reasons for it to be considered legal.
    2. In this upcoming election I believe if I could I would vote for Romney. Although some of his ideas are conservative, I feel that he would be a better person to get us through our problems and lead our country. In the past years of Obamas presidency unemployment has been through the roof. He says that he has an 8 year plan to fix the economy but honestly i think its just a plan to get him reelected. Obama was elected mainly because of his race and many people who have voted for him were unknown of his ideas and policies. On the other hand Romney has strong leadership qualities that I feel can fix our economy and budget our spending. Romney has fixed the credit of his own state which shows he knows what he is actually doing. Also Obama wants to raise taxes for the wealthy and Romney wants to cut taxes for everyone. I disagree with Obamas belief that since someone has money that only they should pay more because that is just not right. Romney wants to cut taxes for everyone and just budget our governmental spending which benefits everyone and not just a certain social class

  40. One important issue that both Obama and Romney share their opinions on is gay rights. Obama supports same- sex marriage while Romney opposes it. This is one issue that both candidates have completely different views on. Obama thinks that everyone should be equal. Romney says it should not be left to the state to decide but rather the Constitution to state that same-sex marriage is illegal. Obama has the opposite view on this, saying it should be left up to the states to decide.

If I could vote in the upcoming election, I would vote for our current president Mr. Obama. I agree this most of his views. I agree with his stance on taxes. I agree with him that tax cuts should be for the middle and lower class, While raising the upper classes taxes to 30 percent. Obama is more liberal and favors change. I also agree with his stance on gay rights. Obama believes that should be equal and that same-sex marriage should be legal. I think that most people favor Obama on this and I think that’s the way it should be. He does believe that it should be left up to the state to decide if its legal with the state. I think that Obama is a great public speaker. With that being said it makes his messages clear to the public and it makes him more attractive to the public. This is another reason why I would chose Barrack Obama in the upcoming election.

  41. President Obama supports and recognizes the union of same sex citizens in marriage, which is an issue that is currently decided by states. He revoked the ban of openly gay members of the military due to his support of the gay community. Although the government has not revoked the Defense of marriage act and it remains a law, the Obama administration has stopped defending it because it recognizes that gay rights are human rights. A program which finances gay rights organizations to tackle discrimination and abuse is being funded by the State Department in order to help protect gays. Lastly, Obama has taken measures to ensure gays have the same partner visitation rights as straights. On the other hand, Mitt Romney does not support gay marriages and believes the constitution should be ratified to include an amendment banning gay marriages rather than leaving the decision to the states. He does not recognize their marriages because he believes that marriage is a traditional word that symbolizes the union of a husband and a wife so it should not be used for same sex marriages. He also does not recognize civil unions, but believes that the states should be allowed to determine what rights are given to gays, under a union. Despite his disapproval of gay marriage, he would not reinstitute the ban on gay military members. In 2002 he stated that all citizens should have equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation. Ultimately, Obama supports gay marriages while Mitt Romney does not.

If I were able to vote, I would reelect President Obama because he is better for the majority of America because he believes that all people should be treated equally. I think that this belief will play a vital role in helping him win because by saying this he obtained majority of the gay population and middle class’ votes. He is a strong speaker and makes people believe that he can reinvigorate the economy through his policies. I think that he is a stronger candidate than Romney because he favors the middle class over the wealthy unlike Romney. I like the fact that Obama wants to cut taxes for the working middle class family in order to put more money into their pockets by not burdening with a high tax rate while increasing the taxes of the upper class in order to put more money in the hands of the middle and lower class. Romney on the other hand, rejects the idea of using taxation to redistribute income. He wants a flatter tax system that cuts taxes for the wealthy in hopes that money will come from the top down. He believes with lower taxes, the wealthy will invest more money, which would help drive the economy. I think that Obama’s plan is more effective because if the middle class is taxed more, they will have less money to spend, so therefore they will be more reluctant to spend money. This would have a negative effect on the economy because less money will be circulated in the economy. I think Obama is the better candidate because he is a president for the people rather than for the corporations. He focuses on protecting the middle class, which is important because the gap between the middle and upper class is increasing as corporations are thriving at the expense of the middle class. In order to stop this, the wealthy must pay their fair share for the greater good. This policy could help pull America out of a recession as average citizens would have more money to spend which would drive the economy.

  42. Regarding the issue of abortion, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have conflicting opinions. Barack Obama supports all abortion rights, meaning that women should have the ability to get an abortion if wanted and/or needed. Obama also supports birth control for girls ages sixteen and older. On the other hand, Mitt Romney feels that abortion should be illegal. Romney feels that state laws should guide abortion rights and that the Surpreme Court ruling on Roe vs. Wade should be reversed. If I were to vote in the next presidential election, I would vote for Mitt Romney for a number of reasons. I agree with Romney regarding the issues of abortion, taxes, and much more. I feel that Romney has the right idea regarding lowering taxes, and I think that he has a good plan to balance the budget. I also agree with Romneys plan to create a U.S-Mexico border fence, as it would benefit the United States regarding immigration issues. Also, I agree that education should not be offered to illegal immigrants, as well as an immigration-verification systems for employers and educators.

Obama and Romney have very different views on gay marriage. Obama openly supports gay marriage, and previously he had supported the idea of civil unions. He thinks the states rather than the federal government should decide the matter. Also, Obama repealed the ban on openly gay service members by removing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”. Romney, on the other hand, opposes both gay marriage and civil unions. He has said, however, that he would not look to renew the ban on gay service members.

I would vote for Obama because I mostly agree with his points. I like that he supports abortion rights because I feel that women should be able to have a choice. In addition, I think he is right by not opening unexplored areas to drilling. We need the earth and it is important to preserve what has not yet been damaged. I also agree with his views on gay marriage since I feel gay and lesbian couples should at the very least have hospital visitation rights and other rights available to men and women who are married. I do not agree with his limited reservations on gun control because I think there should be more laws on gun restriction. I don’t see why a person who is not a police officer or who does not have a hunting license should need a gun. I agree with Obama’s stance on terrorism and foreign policy. I think peace talks are a good direction to go in. I hope that troops will be out of the Middle East after all this time, and I like that Obama has a plan to get them out by the end of 2014.

  45. In this upcoming election it will be very tight between both candidates. Both parties are equally favored so far but there is one big difference between the two. Tax cuts will play a huge role in the election and how both act on it. Mr. Obama wants to allow tax cuts, first established in the Bush administration, to expire for Americans making more than $250,000 a year. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney cited a group of economic studies to show that his tax cut plan won't increase the U.S budget deficit or shift the tax burden to middle income taxpayers.

I would most definitely vote Obama for a second term in office. I feel that he has more respect toward the middle/lower class than Romney does. This is a huge deal regarding that the middle and lower Cmake up most of the population in the U.S.

  46. 1. The candidates for the 2012 election have very different viewpoints when it comes to most issues. One major issue of the election is gay rights. Mitt Romney is against legalizing gay marriage and also opposes a civil union that is identical to marriage aside from the name. Barack Obama, on the other hand, supports the legalization of gay marriage. Obama has put effort into progress for more gay rights including repealing the military ban on openly gay service members.

    2. If I could vote in this election, I would vote for Barack Obama. Now when I make this decision, I am not implying that I have full confidence in the candidate and I concede that the country might be better off in the hands of the other candidate, but I don't see it. I feel that Barack Obama is the best candidate available, not the best one possible. Although I'd rather not label myself as a democrat or republican, because those who do tend to blindly follow whoever it is that runs for their party, I do admit that I tend to agree with most of the viewpoints that the democratic candidates take on issues. Issues such as gay rights and abortion are issues I find important. Barack Obama's stances on these topics are far closer to my opinions than Mitt Romney's. While I understand, Romney's reasoning for his stance on taxes, I agree more with Obama although the scale he uses could use adjustment. I feel that households that bring in a larger income, should pay a higher percentage of taxes because they should have more excess to contribute than do people with less money. While, a President should be decided on many more reasons than the ones I have given, issues such as these are important to me and Obama's stances on these issues reflect mine more than Romney's.

  47. 1) In the upcoming election of 2012 the race has been narrowed down to Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. Obama in my opinion is a moderate liberal and Romney is a moderate conservative. On the issue of the economy obama wants to continue with his economic stimules packages of big government spending and universal healthcare. On the other side Romney basically wants to stop almost all of the government spending and instead focus on reducing the deficet and cutting taxes for wealthy Americans. Romney also wants to get rid of "obama care" and repeal the highly controversal government heath care reforms. He believes all of these measures will put america back on track and create more jobs in the process.

    2) If I could vote in the upcoming election my vote would go for Obama. He has the right idea of how to get this country out of this economic crisis and also has the experience of his 4 preveious years in office to know how to run things in his next 4. Although many may argue that his "out of control" government spending is ruining our country, history has proven time and time again that the best way to lead America out of an economic crisis is big government spending. Economic stimules packages under Obama have created millions of jobs and green energy alternatives have also created many more jobs while at the same time making America more energy independent and eco friendly. Obama's new healthcare reforms have also gave millions of Americans coverage that would otherwise not been able to afford it. Obama has also finally pulled out all our troops from iraq after a long, bloody and pointless war started by Bush. Obama is the best choice for this country in the 2012 election because all Romney would do it reverse all the gains the obama administration has made in the past 4 years. Obama 2012'

  48. 1. Obama and Romney have completely opposite views on the issue of gay marriage. Obama supports gay marriage, but believes the state’s should decide whether or not they are going to allow it. Romney does not support gay marriage and does not believe the decision should be left to the states. He wants to ban gay marriage altogether, with an amendment to the constitution. Romney does not support civil unions either, but he believes the states can be left to decide what rights people would have in a civil union.

    2. I would vote for Barrack Obama in the 2012 election. Although I do not think Obama has done such a great job as president so far, I do agree with him on most of the issues mentioned in the newsday slideshow. I believe Obama is more of a people pleaser and will do more to help out and support controversial issues such as abortion rights for women and gay marriage. Obama’s views also seem much more favorable to the middle class, which is the majority of America. Mitt Romney’s policies seem like they would only be more beneficial to wealthier Americans, and that is very unfair. I also think Obama will take bigger steps towards improving the economy than Romney will. Also, I am aware that Romney has completely changed his views on certain issues. I think it is important to have a president that is sure of what he wants and will stand by his viewpoints, not change his mind. President Obama has strong opinions and a strong voice and seems to reach out and connect to the people of American way more than Romney does. Although Obama may have not done all that was expected of him during his presidency so far, I do believe with more time and support from Americans, he will help out our country tremendously in the long run.

  49. i would have to choose obama. He needs more time for what he started. when he became president he was already in a deep hole of econmic problems and it takes time to fix those problems. Mitt Romney isnt doing anything good for the country by cutting taxes. the rich need to get taxed more and the poor need more tax cuts. with the increase in tax cuts there would be less money given to the schools and to other things that need money. i think mitt Romney will just cause more problems and I think obama will be a better turn out in the long run.

  50. 1. Obama and Romney Obama are two totally different candidates and are similar in almost no way. Obama wants to continue with his economic ideas of big government spending and universal healthcare. Romney basically wants to stop almost all of the government spending and instead focus on reducing the deficet and cutting taxes for wealthy Americans which I do not agree with. I feel that the wealthy should be taxed more, and the the middle class should receive a tax cut.

    2. During the 2012 Presidential Election, I would vote Obama because along with myself ,the people of the US are beginning to connect with him, and Mitt Romney hasn't done anything to catch my attention. I feel that he will obtain many votes from the middle class, and gay population because of his beliefs. I like the fact that he is looking to give back to the working class by cutting taxes for them, and not for the wealthy. The wealthy people are called wealthy for a reason. Romney supports the trickle down effect, and believes that by cutting taxes for the wealthy will cause the money to go into the economy from the top which is the wealthy, to the poor at the bottom. If Obama were to be voted again, the gap between the wealthy and the middle class will be closing instead of separating even more by Romney being elected.

  51. In this year’s presidential race I think it will be a close decision. Barrack Obama is liberal while Romney is conservative. Obama and Romney have two different views on gay marriage. Obama openly supports it while Romney opposes it and says it should be banned with an amendment to the constitution. Obama understands that in this day in age, gays are more common than ever. He believes we should support them.
If I was able to vote in the upcoming election I would vote for Obama. Even though I believe he did not achieve much in his first term, I think he will bring more to our country during his second. Obama to me is more understanding towards the younger generation. He approves of same sex marriage and abortion. I believe it is the woman’s decision whether or not to choose the path of abortion. That is why I would choose Obama. Obama wants to raise the taxes on the wealthy. He also wants to spend less on military to balance the debt. I agree with him and believe we need to decrease our country’s debt drastically. By limiting costs on military and raising taxes for the wealthy making over 1 million a year, we can achieve this goal. Obama is a strong candidate and I would like him to return for his second term.

  52. 1-a subject that keeps coming up for which candidate to vote for in the 2012 elections is wether or not abortion should be made illegal. it seems to me that Candidate Mitt Romney cant make up his own mind about abortion. he claims that he now believes that abortion should be made illegal and will pass laws to make it stop. Obama on the other hand feels that abortion should be up to the mother and only the mother, there are a few guide lines, which i agree with, such as no late abortions.
2- since this class started, this is the first time i have payed any attention towards politics, and don't believe my opinion holds any water however from the slide show, Mitt has gone back on his word to many times on very serious topics and i personally find that to be a big turn off in picking a leader. obama stands out more in my mind by the way he portrays himself and connects to the middle american. and although obama promised a lot i think another 4 years would give him the amount of time he would need to accomplish more of his promised goals.

President Obama during his election campaign four years ago had promised to over the entire nation’s immigration policy but failed to deliver on that promise during his term as President. In response to that failure, President Obama has recently issued a directive stating that children brought illegally into this country by their parents be exempt from deportation. This directive could possibly benefit up to 1.4 million children and provide them a path to citizenship within this country. Romney has taken a bolder stance in directly dealing with the drain that illegal immigration has caused on our countries infrastructure. Romney favors building a wall to prevent illegal immigration and deter those from crossing our borders. He also opposes offering illegal immigrants legal status that attend college, but makes an exception for those who are willing to serve in our armed forces as a means to obtaining citizenship within the United States. Romney also favors allowing more visas and entrance into the United States for those with higher education who are being offered jobs by companies in the U.S.

I would vote for Romney, because he is willing to deal with the immigration issue head on, and force those who want to be a citizen to do so legally. President Obama fails to recognize that by having so many illegal immigrants in this country, the legal citizens of this country are being forced to pay for the services that are offered to all. Romney is trying to put a fair price on the privilege to become a US citizen, and not just allow for illegal immigration to destroy the infrastructure of our cities and states.

  54. Obama and Romney have completely opposite opinions on the issue of immigration. Obama is a firm supporter of immigration and has recently passed acts stating that illegal children are exempt from deportation and may be granted work permits. Also, Obama is a supporter of acts being passed that would make obtaining citizenship easier for illegal immigrants. Romney, on the other hand, is anti-immigration and is against the granting of legal status. Also, Romney is a supporter of punishment being issued out to employers who hire illegal immigrants.
Although I miss the election by only a month, if I were to vote I would choose Mitt Romney. Right now America is in one of its worst recessions in history. Although I do feel Obama can undoubtedly lead us out of the recession, I feel that Mitt Romney, having the past achievements in his governor position, would be better suited to do so. Also, I feel that Obama is blind to the real pressures of the middle class. I also do not agree with his immigration standpoint. I feel that one should only be allowed to live in a country if they pay taxes like other legal citizens. I feel as though Obama was elected on his race, not on his policy. Everybody wants to be a part of something big, hence why American citizens wanted to take part in the election of the first black president. This does not make him a bad choice by the American people; however the evidence is in the statistics. Unemployment, although now decreasing, have been record highs during Obama’s presidency. I also like the policy that Romney has on corporations. His view that corporations are citizens is a bit extreme however true. America needs strong corporations as its backbone for the declining economy. Also, Romney believes strictly in tax cuts, which is always the popular demand from the general public.

The tax issue was a major argument drawn between both candidates that regarded some big differences in opinion. Overall Romney seems to be looking to cut taxes while Obama plans on leaving some the way they stand as well as raising other types of taxes.Obama has a plan which regards putting a 30 percent tax rate among people with incomes more than 1 million. Romney disagrees with that plan, for he is concluding other methods of handling the tax issue. Romney plans to eliminate specific tax deductions, he would also like to look for budget cuts from the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Cutting the corporate tax rate to 25 percent is also a plan of Romney's, while Obama plans on leaving it the way it is. The estate tax is also desired to be cut by Romney but not by Obama. Once again, it seems that Romney plans to cut major taxes while Obama seems to actually be increasing taxation slightly.

    2.
Confidence and integrity were two major characteristics needed upon both candidates during the 2012 presidential election. Overall I feel that Mitt Romney had the upper edge during the election and that I would most likely vote for him. Romney expressed great confidence throughout the election, for he made his statements clear and powerful. I noticed that Obama didn’t express much eye contact or acknowledgment whenever Romney would disagree with his opinions. These actions shown from Obama had given him a terrible image in my eyes, for it showed as if he was practically backing down to Romney. Obama had seemed skeptic on some of his statements and at times reworded his opinions, as if they didn’t seem as clear to the people as he figured. I found Romney’s debate tactics extremely interesting and impressive, for he changed some of his past opinions for the debate. This strategy used by Romney seemed to have caught Obama off guard, therefore making him look weak and uncertain. The tax issue discussed between the two is what gained most of my attention. Overall Romney plans to cut taxes while Obama plans to leave them and or raise them. The fact that Romney plans on cutting the taxes he stated gives him a superior advantage. There is nothing more that the people desire than tax cuts. I felt that almost all of Romney’s statements were very effective and that the debate really increased his chances of becoming our country's new president.

  57. 1.As always the tax issue was the main arugment.this is a major porblem in the united states. its effecting the middle class the most. both candidates have diffrent plans for tax changes. Rommney plans to cut all taxes on all classes of society. Obama has said that Mitt Romneys tax numbers do not add up and that the Republican presidential candidates promise to lower tax rates for all families cant be paid for without cutting popular tax deductions for middle class families. people like what rommney is saying. the middle class people wanna have tax cuts. but what if it dosnt work out have tax cuts for every class. then where does that leave america. in more econmic problems? obama has a safer plan he plans to raise the rich peoples taxes. they have plenty of money. but i think Rommney had won the debate because he told the people what they wanted to hear, he also has some other ideas to help in prove the country.

    2. I watched it on CNN on the t.v. The reporter pretty pointed out the main topics. The reportor had agreed with me and liked what Rommney had to say. he liked the idea of changing how its been the last four years. i think the reporter talked the way he had was because he felt like that would be the best for the country and would work out best in the long run. -liam armstrong
